High-Risk Pregnancies Increase Risk of Birth Injuries

July 23, 2013

While expecting the birth of a new child is a wonderful time for women and their families, unfortunately, some women have complicated, high-risk pregnancies that will require special attention and potentially even special medical care before, during and after the birthing process. In such cases, it’s crucial that military doctors, midwives and nurses are able to:

  • Identify the signs of high-risk pregnancy as early as possible
  • Administer the proper tests, medications or other treatments to minimize the risk to the infants in high-risk pregnancies
  • Make immediate, correct diagnoses during the birthing process to protect the baby.

Some specific factors that can contribute to high-risk pregnancies include (but are not limited to):

  • A mother having high blood pressure or diabetes during pregnancy
  • A mother being obese during pregnancy
  • A pregnant mother being over the age of 45
  • A pregnant mother smoking, drinking alcohol or using drugs during pregnancy (while illegal drugs can harm infants, so too can some prescription medications, such as SSRI antidepressants.)
  • Multiple babies (e.g., twins, triplets, etc.)
  • A baby being breech (i.e., in a position in which the baby’s bottom or feet would come out first)
  • Prolapsed umbilical cord, the umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck, or other umbilical cord accidents

In the event that a mother has a high-risk pregnancy and doctors fail to diagnose or properly treat the mother or infant:

  • The infant has a significantly increased risk of developing serious, potentially irreversible birth injuries.
  • The mother and baby will likely have a legitimate medical malpractice claim against the negligent or reckless doctor(s), nurse(s) and/or other medical professional(s).
