Parents of injured babies suffer injuries too

March 20, 2019

When a baby is injured by a military doctor during birth, the parents suffer injuries as well.

When a baby is born sick or injured, the entire care team is focused on the baby. However, a new study shows that the parents of newborns who have been hospitalized also need care. They tend to have higher rates of depression, anxiety and acute or post-traumatic stress disorders. Some studies of parents of preterm babies report postpartum depression rates as high as 40 percent, well above the 10 to 15 percent reported for women generally after childbirth.  If the baby’s injuries are caused by a medical mistake, then parents understandably may also feel overwhelming anger.

These findings are no surprise to us.  From our over 30 years’ experience with military birth injury claims, we have seen first-hand that when a baby suffers a birth injury the entire family is harmed and changed forever.  This is why we focus on getting a settlement or verdict that ultimately benefits the whole family not just the child.

If your baby suffered a brain injury, birth injury or even died during childbirth at an Army, Navy or Air Force hospital, we can help.  As a former high-risk labor and delivery nurse, our military birth injury lawyer has been successfully handling exclusively military medical malpractice cases for over 30 years and can help you too.

For a free, no obligation consultation, you may call our military birth injury helpline toll free at 877-695-8757, e-mail us at LawHelp@MilitaryMedicalMalpractice.com, or fill our the short form on the right side of this page.
